Where Does The Time Go?

I had so many good intentions of writing more often but time has (as usual) got away from me.  I used to write a lot in my lunch break, but my new phone is a Windows phone and there is not good WP app I have found (if anyone can recommend one I will be very grateful!) so I’m trying to fit it in at home.  In hindsight, perhaps rebooting my weight loss efforts over the summer was a mistake, I have been really really busy with birthdays, weekends away etc etc, so I haven’t given it my full attention.  But September starts tomorrow, I have just purchased a new year-long gym membership and I have ended the summer at a lower weight than I started it.

So far this week (my SW week runs Saturday to Saturday), I have been to McDonalds, Nandos and the cinema.  That doesn’t sound great, does it?  But I planned and stuck to my syns, stayed in control and feel so much better psychologically for it.  That has given me a massive boost for the rest of the week, and I’m excited to go back to the gym tomorrow.  For the last couple of weeks I had intended to work out at home, but I stayed in bed every day.  Fail.  But my renewal is done and I’m ready to get back.  I might even do kettlebells.  Maybe.

I feel so inspired that I think a September challenge might be in order.  Taking my current low fitness levels into consideration, does anyone have any suggestions??

This is a bit random, but I thought I would share anyway.  This week I have tried a new fruit and a new veg.  I wasn’t convinced about either but they are both yummy.  Chinese flat cabbage (think squashed looking white cabbage) is sweet – I like it stirfried with soy sauce or cumin seeds.  I don’t think I’d boil it though, I like the crunch!  And the fruit is greengages; I’m not good with soft fruits with stones (except cherries) but I will happily make an exception for these.  Yum yum yum.

Breakfast Is The Most Important Meal Of The Day

I can hear my Mum in my head telling me how important breakfast is – and she’s right (hope you’re reading this, Mum!) The word “breakfast” literally means “to break your fast”, ie the time overnight when you weren’t eating. It kick-starts your metabolism and gets you ready for the day ahead.
The main problem I have with breakfast is finding something interesting to take with me to work to eat after the gym. For ages I took fruit and a cereal bar – definitely low calorie but not exactly filling – I was hungry again by 9.30!
This week I have tried something new for breakfast, which looks like a big meal but is full of vegetables and keeps me full until lunchtime. There are two parts, which are both good on their own as well. For a working week I made:
Breakfast Hash:
Dice about 8-10 new potatoes, a red onion, 50g chorizo. Slowly fry the chorizo, then add the potatoes. When they start to soften, add the onion. Add whatever vegetables you like to this and fry until soft – I used mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers and spinach. Chorizo is 10.5 syns per 100g for Slimming Worlders, so I make this about 1 syn per portion.
Divide this into five, this will be the bed on which you serve part 2:
Breakfast Frittata:
Chop up five low fat sausages and five trimmed rashers of bacon, and brown in a pan. Spray a large casserole dish or similar with cooking spray and add the sausage and bacon. Add mushrooms, tomatoes, and anything else you fancy (I also put in baked beans and asparagus) then crack in enough eggs to cover the mix – I think I used 8. Mix well and bake in a preheated oven at gas mark 6 until set. Mine looked really watery when it came out, but was fine when it cooled. Cut into 5 and serve with the hash. Reduced fat sausages are around 1.5 syns each on Slimming World so 1.5 syns per portion of frittata.
I have reheated these successfully and also frozen it with no problems.
These are both good ways to get vegetables into your breakfast, I think most of us tend to have fruit. Next week I will be trying ham and egg cups, which a girl at my gum recommended – if they are successful then I’ll share the recipe!

Here We Go Again!

So, here I am again. I’m not going to explain my absence, since all my most recent posts seem to be like that! Lets just say that I’ve gained weight and I lost focus.

What have I done about it? I’ve decided to pick myself up, dust myself off and carry on. The first step was going back to Slimming World. I know some of my readers don’t like weight loss agroups or programmes, but I’ve found it really helpful for me – which is why I made the decision to return when Ia found that I was ready. I’ve joined a new group, the members are all really friendly and supportive – one of the problems with my previous group was that it was quite cliquey and one clique in particular took over.

Anyway, I went back a few weeks ago and it has been a bit of a shaky start, but I feel really good about it. At my last weigh in I gained 2lb, but I stayed to group, which I’m proud of, and I had a good chat with the leader afterwards, which was really helpful. I have also approached my gym and asked for help designing a new programme to help with my weight loss. Currently I get there for a 30 minute session every weekday, and he helped me to make the most of that. And the final thing that will help me is writing this blog – I find it really helps me to write down what I’m doing – and it keeps me accountable. So watch this space, this time I really will be back!
